Wood type and Stain to go along with white...

    A little background:

A friend and I are restoring (more like renovating) his '69 Karmann Ghia. The car will be in a Black and White color scheme. I would like to make a white-ish wood grain dash. I was thinking a pine or something with either a clear or pale white stain. Honestly, I have no idea about any of this but woodworking has always fascinated me. Thanks for any help.

If you are looking for a "white" stain you could get "pickling white". It will give you white and still allow the grain to show. Just make sure to try it on a test sample of the wood you are going to use. I would go down to the local paint/hardware store and talk to the oldest looking guy you can find. At the ACE I worked at we would always open a quart and try it on some wood someone brought in to see if they liked it.

Just what I was looking for!

Any advice on wood choice? I'd really like this to be a white with a wood grain showing through.

Ash. I've never seen it with a white finish, but I've seen it plenty with black. The way I've seen it on furniture projects I've done is that the finish has been so dark, what grain you "see" is in relief. I don't know how it would take white though.

Poplar is a white wood, right?

Not really a wood working guy.
