    Suggestions and advice please..

I was looking into getting a sugarcane manual mill, by the prices are pretty high. So I think I might give it a shot at fabbing it. The design looks fairly simply. But I would like some advice on how to go about and tackle this project.
    Thanks

Personally, I don't think you can build it cheaper as a one off/custom fab work, unless you have access to free waterjet/laser cutter services for the gears/body and a way to machine the grinding platens.

Based on what's shown in the pic, you could probably get away with using splined shafts, a few gears and some plates. The splined shafts and gears could simply be purchased or with some ingenuity, you might be able to use an old manual transmission as a parts donor. The plates could probably just be drilled on a drill press.

Looks pretty simple, though. I guess, just like anything, you could make it as complicated as you want.
