What is the rule of thumb regarding "unions" in black pipe runs (for natural gas)

I'm tapping off of an existing "T" in my gas line for my new grill (wahoo - no more trips to the propane refill station). I did a bunch of black pipe for gas when I added a furnace and redid some water heater locations. It's been so long, I need a little refresher.

What is the rule of thumb on black pipe unions? Most of the old pipe work in my house has a union in every segment (between turns). When I did my work, I only put them where aligning the elbow was critical.

    What is the accepted method?

Well - I erred on the side of caution and got unions for each segment. I'm ticked though - no 2' lengths - smallest was 30"...

    Sweet - layin' pipe tomorrow...
